Grouting

At PCA Ground Engineering, we offer comprehensive and innovative engineering services across Australia for geotechnical, structural, and civil infrastructure projects. Specialises in innovative grouting technologies tailored to challenging geotechnical conditions. Our high-pressure grouting systems and earth retention solutions are engineered for performance, low environmental impact, and flexibility in restricted access environments.

High-Performance Earth Retention with GroutShore™

Our proprietary GroutShore™ system integrates high-pressure grout columns and structural steel to form cantilever retaining walls that can be installed prior to excavation. Compact, low-impact drilling equipment allows us to deliver reliable solutions where conventional methods such as CFA or Sheet Piles are not viable due to access, vibration, or environmental constraints.

Key Advantages:

  • High-pressure grout injection for improved soil mixing and load transfer
  • Compact equipment for tight-access or sensitive locations
  • Zero-vibration methodology for adjacent structure protection
  • Functions as temporary shoring but can also be designed as part of a permanent retention system

This system enables the safe delivery of earth retention on geotechnically complex or environmentally constrained sites. The Groutshoretm system provides earth retention, while minimising impact on neighbouring properties and road networks. The system is ideally suited to projects with strict access limitations, vibration concerns or environmental sensitivities.

Earth Retention in Sandy and Soft Ground

On sites with sandy or soft ground, where loose soils and close boundaries create serious challenges for excavation, PCA provides safe, non-invasive retention methods. Our primary solution involves the installation of a contiguous wall of overlapping grout columns formed by high-pressure grouting. This approach allows excavation to proceed safely without vibration or structural damage to nearby assets.

This method includes:

  • High-pressure grouting at up to 200 bar to form 400mm diameter columns
  • Drilling to depths of up to 10m
  • Installation of universal beams or steel CHS elements at regular intervals for structural reinforcement

This technique is ideal for retaining depths up to 4 metres, providing a cost-effective and low-impact system that protects adjacent properties while allowing efficient excavation and basement construction in weak soils.

For retained heights greater than 4 metres, PCA employs a hybrid system that combines:

  • Structural concrete piles, installed with close spacing
  • High-pressure grout columns to infill the narrow soil gaps between the concrete piles

This method enhances global wall stability while maintaining the vibration-free, low-disturbance benefits of grout injection. Concrete piles provide the main structural resistance, while the grout infill improves continuity, cohesion, and wall integrity, especially in variable or loose soil profiles.

Both systems offer low-permeability barriers, making them highly suitable for basement retention projects where effective groundwater exclusion is critical.

Advanced Soil Stabilisation with Microfine Cement

For sites with loose or sandy soils, PCA offers permeation grouting, a proven solution for improving soil cohesion and permeability. Microfine cement grout is ideal for stabilising granular materials, making it especially effective in coastal or reclaimed land conditions where conventional grouts may not penetrate adequately.

Benefits of microfine cement permeation grouting:

  • Enhances cohesion and reduces permeability in sandy and silty soils
  • Allows controlled injection into low-friction soils with minimal ground movement
  • Ideal for underpinning, earth retention, and pre-construction ground improvement

Combined with high-pressure injection, microfine cement significantly improves ground strength and uniformity, enabling the successful delivery of excavation, retention, and foundation systems on geotechnically difficult sites.

Targeted Void Filling with Standard and Thixotropic Grout

In addition to structural earth retention and ground improvement, PCA Ground Engineering provides expert grouting services for void filling beneath existing structures, roads, and critical infrastructure. Voids may result from washouts, sinkholes, subsoil erosion, or decayed infrastructure and can seriously compromise stability if not addressed.

We offer:

  • Standard cementitious grout, suitable for accessible and confined voids
  • Thixotropic grout, ideal for irregular, loose, or poorly confined cavities where flow needs to be controlled to prevent material migration
  • Pressure and volume controlled delivery using advanced computer controlled grouting equipment.

To ensure accuracy and effectiveness, PCA integrates geophysical investigation techniques into our void identification and remediation strategies. These tools allow us to:

  • Detect hidden subsurface voids and soft spots
  • Map the dimensions and depth of affected areas
  • Customise grout mix and injection strategy based on real-time site data

By identifying voids early in the construction process, we can mitigate risks to the foundation system, reduce potential delays, and avoid costly remediation works. This proactive approach supports overall project efficiency, structural safety, and long-term durability. Our void filling services are frequently combined with broader retention or stabilisation works, ensuring comprehensive and integrated ground engineering outcomes.

The PCA Ground Engineering Advantage

  • Low Impact Construction: Ideal for built-up areas, narrow access, or environmentally sensitive zones
  • Customised Delivery: Multiple rigs and mobile grout plants enable flexible scheduling and rapid deployment
  • Latest Technology: The latest grouting equipment can deliver a range of grout designs. We have cement silo systems for high volume and sophisticated computer controlled grout stations that can deliver grouts to set pressure ranges to reduce damage to the rock or soil profile.
  • Single source contractor: PCA Ground Engineering analyse the challenge, design and install the solution, which provides reduced contract risk to the asset owner.
  • Quality Control: PCA Ground Engineering is third party certified for Quality (ISO9001), Management (ISO45001) and Environment Management (ISO14001) ensuring every project is delivered to the highest quality standards.
